KAUAI GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES FEDERAL CREDIT UNION ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2021 CORONAVIRUS RENTAL AND UTILITY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM STARTING MAY 10

Starting May 10, 2021, residents of Kauai and Niihau with a demonstrated reduction in income due to the COVID 19 pandemic will be eligible to apply for the County of Kauai’s 2021 Coronavirus Rental and Utility Assistance Program.  To qualify, individuals must demonstrate a household income of not more than 80% of the area median income (AMI).

 

The 2021 Coronavirus Rental and Utility program is designed to support individuals and families pay essential cost of living expenses as the economy recovers in the aftermath of the pandemic. Eligible expenses include future rent, rental arrears and utilities in arrears for the period March 2020 through December 2021.

 

Eligible applicants may receive up to $4,500 per month for rent with no monthly cap on qualifying utilities. Information from both tenants and landlords must be provided in order for an application to qualify for the program. The cooperation of both parties is appreciated.

 

Households with income of no more than 50% percent of the AMI or in which one or more household member(s) is unemployed and has been unemployed for 90 days will be prioritized. Funding will be limited to households’ primary residence of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau. Households will be limited to 12 months of total grant assistance.

 

Eligibility:

To qualify for rent and/ or utility assistance on May 10, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Kaua‘i County resident;
  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Be a renter
  • Have incurred a loss of income due to the COVID-19 pandemic or experienced significant increased costs, or other financial hardship, directly or indirectly related to the outbreak, and have an annual gross household income at or below 80% of the area median income (AMI) for the number of members in their household.

 

The following chart illustrates the 80% area median income (AMI) for various household sizes on which the qualification threshold is based:

  • 1 persons: $57,100
  • 2 persons: $65,250
  • 3 persons: $73,400
  • 4 persons: $81,550
  • 5 persons: $88,100
  • 6 persons: $94,600
  • 7 persons: $101,150
  • 8 persons: $107,650

Calculation of AMI

Online applications will be accepted starting May 10 at 6:00am.In person application assistance at the Piikoi building will be available on May 11 from 9am until 3pm.

Applications will also be accepted at KGEFCU satellite locations scheduled around the island. A calendar with scheduled locations is forthcoming and will be posted below.

Persons without internet access or a computer are encouraged to visit one of the satellite program locations or reach out to their local library for times, availability, and guidelines on available computer use once the program launches.

Applicants needing an auxiliary aid/service or other accommodation due to a disability should contact KGEFCU at rent@kgefcu.org as soon as possible, noting “ADA” in the subject line of the email. Early requests for assistance will ensure KGEFCU staff can respond on a priority basis.

Kauai Government Employees Federal Credit Union (KGEFCU) hosted a webinar on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 to introduce the 2021 Coronavirus Rental and Utility Assistance. It was attended by more 130 residents. Questions and feedback from the community have been consolidated and the recorded webinar is available for viewing on the website.

Intake specialists will be reaching out to the landlords and property managers for W9's and Vendor Verification Forms if not included with application. While completed applications will reduce processing time, our intake team will assist you if more documentation Is required.

For in person online application assistance, please visit these locations on these dates and times. In-person applications are for persons that need extra assistance to fill out their online applications. If you are able to access the internet and can sign on and apply on your own, we encourage that so that we respectfully reserve the space for those that need the help.

  • May 26th - KGEFCU Kilauea Branch (2555 Ala Namahana Pkwy, Suite 801), from 9am to 3pm.
  • May 27th - Lihue Neighbor Center, from 5pm to 7pm for Pacific Islander intake assistance.

    Translators will be on site to assist.

  • May 29th - Pi`ikoi Building in Lihue, from 9am to 1pm.
  • July 15th - The Hanalei Initiative (Kuhio Hwy, Suite e-205 in Hanalei), from 9am to 1pm.
  • July 26th - Pi`ikoi Building in Lihue, from 9am to 1pm.
